Solid, engineered, laminate... These three words do not describe the same product. They do not share the same composition, the same lifespan, or the same price range.

First, an Important Clarification...

 

The term "laminate flooring" is technically incorrect when used alongside the word "parquet."

According to French standards, a true hardwood floor must include at least 2.5 mm of noble wood as a wear layer. Laminate contains none. It is a wood imitation, visually very convincing, but made of resin and HDF panels.

In summary:

  • Solid hardwood flooring: 100% noble wood, a single species, from top to bottom of the plank
  • Engineered hardwood flooring: 3 layers, including a top layer of noble wood (2.5 to 6 mm)
  • Laminate flooring: no noble wood, a wood imitation made of resin and HDF panel

This changes everything when it comes to lifespan, renovation potential, and the added value to your property.


Solid Hardwood Flooring: A Long-Term Investment

 

What It Is

Each plank is cut from a single piece of noble wood — oak, walnut, beech, teak, merbau...

It is the most authentic product on the market. And by far the most durable.

 

Its Strengths

  • Lifespan of 35 to 50 years minimum, provided it receives appropriate care
  • Can be sanded and refinished multiple times: one sanding every 10 to 15 years is enough to restore a like-new appearance
  • Adds genuine heritage value to your home
  • Available in a wide variety of species, finishes (oiled, lacquered, waxed) and installation methods (nailed, glued)

 

Its Limitations

  • Sensitive to humidity and temperature variations: it expands and contracts
  • Requires professional installation, either nailed onto battens or glued onto a screed
  • Higher purchase cost

 

Which Rooms?

  • Living room, dining room, hallway, office: dry, high-traffic rooms where quality shows and lasts
  • Bedroom: for a warm and authentic atmosphere
  • Staircases: provided a sufficiently hard species is selected

Engineered Hardwood Flooring: The Best Quality-to-Durability Ratio

 

What It Is

Engineered flooring is made up of three layers:

  • The wear layer: noble wood ranging from 2.5 to 6 mm
  • The core: wood from common species
  • The backing layer: a stabilising layer of softwood

This multi-layer system is specifically designed to counterbalance the natural expansion of wood, something solid flooring does not achieve.

 

Its Strengths

  • More stable than solid wood in the face of temperature and humidity variations
  • Can be sanded between 1 and 5 times depending on the thickness of its wear layer
  • Compatible with underfloor heating (glued installation)
  • Can be installed floating, glued or nailed, making it more accessible than solid wood
  • Wide choice of species, widths and finishes

 

Its Limitations

  • Shorter lifespan than solid wood over the very long term
  • Once the wear layer is worn through, the floor can no longer be refinished

 

Which Rooms?

  • All dry rooms: living room, bedroom, office, hallway
  • Kitchen: good resistance when the wear layer is thick and the finish is appropriate
  • Over underfloor heating: this is actually the recommended choice in this case

Laminate Flooring: The Accessible and Practical Option

 

What It Is

It is not wood, but it can look remarkably similar.

Laminate is made up of an HDF panel topped with a printed decorative layer (high-resolution paper imitating wood) and a protective resin coating. The visual result can be very convincing.

 

Its Strengths

  • Very accessible price point: the most economical option per square metre
  • Easy to install: floating click installation, including by a non-professional
  • Simple maintenance: resistant to stains and scratches depending on the quality
  • Available in an endless range of styles and shades

 

Its Limitations

  • Cannot be sanded or refinished. When worn, the entire floor must be replaced
  • Sensitive to standing water depending on product quality
  • Does not add heritage value to your property
  • Limited lifespan under heavy use

 

Which Rooms?

  • Guest bedroom, secondary office: low-traffic rooms where aesthetics matter more than longevity
  • Rental property: controlled budget, easy replacement
  • Kitchen: possible with specially treated versions

Which Species Should You Choose?

 

The wood species matters just as much as the type of flooring.

Oak is the most versatile species — hard, attractive, available in all finishes. It is the classic choice on the French market.

Exotic species (teak, merbau) are particularly resistant to humidity, making them ideal for kitchens or certain covered outdoor spaces.

Walnut and beech bring a more contemporary touch, with warm tones and more pronounced grain.

The hardness of a species is measured on the Brinell scale: the higher the score, the more resistant the wood is to everyday wear. This is a criterion not to be overlooked in high-traffic rooms.


What About Humid Rooms in the South of France?

 

In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, the Mediterranean climate plays a role in your choice.

In summer, high temperatures and dry conditions cause the wood to shrink. In winter and during humid spells, it swells. These cycles are more pronounced than in other regions of France.

The direct consequence: solid hardwood requires careful acclimatisation before installation, and more regular maintenance. Engineered flooring, thanks to its multi-layer structure, absorbs these variations more effectively, and that is a concrete advantage in our southern interiors.
